New Media & Social Change
People no longer rely exclusively on the nightly news, newspapers and or magazines to “receive information about what is going on in the world.” In our modern age, information is available 24/7 and there is no longer a delay in disseminating information thought to be newsworthy. The recording of “history and/or historical events” is not exclusively limited to scholars and the written word recorded in historical text. History is now being recorded and put up for all to see by the “Average Joe.” We have all heard it said that “a picture is worth a thousand words” and we all know what a profound impact visual images can have on every one of us. With the advent of the internet and the advancements that have come along with Social media, people can now receive first-hand news account within mere moments of events actually occurring. Advancements in technology allow for ease and expediency when posting pictures and video images to blog pages, social networking sites, the internet, UTube etc… this allows not only news, but other topics and/or subject matter of social, political, environmental concern, etc… to be distributed worldwide in minutes. These technologies coupled with photographic evidence allow for a heightened awareness regarding what is actually transpiring in our world and helps facilitate a more immediate shift in global thinking (consciousness).
